Join us for a conversation with Tamiko Nimura, local Asian-American creative nonfiction writer and community historian. Nimura will discuss her memoir A Place For What We Lose: A Daughter’s Return to Tule Lake , a book that Publishers Weekly calls “a memorable debut.” Nimura interweaves her late Japanese American father’s unpublished wartime memoir with her own meditations on grief, memory, and family legacy. Time will be set aside for questions and a book signing. Co-sponsored by Friends of Mukai, Vashon Heritage Museum, Vashon Library, and Women Hold the Key. Books will be available for sale at the event and can be ordered and purchased at the Vashon Bookshop. For adults. Please register, space is limited. Epic Worlds and Celestial Prophecies: Exploring the Between Earth and Sky Trilogy with Rebecca Roanhorse Step into a sprawling world of celestial magic, political intrigue, and ancient prophecies with New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Roanhorse as we dive deep into her acclaimed "Between Earth and Sky" trilogy. " Black Sun ", " Fevered Star ", and " Mirrored Heavens " are inspired by the rich and diverse cultures of the pre-Columbian Americas, reshaping modern speculative fiction with unmissable worldbuilding. "Black Sun", the first book in the trilogy, introduces us to the holy city of Tova. The winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain. Whether you are a longtime fan of the trilogy or searching for your next immersive fantasy read, this is an event you won’t want to miss out on.
