Melanie Sue Bowles is the founder of Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary. In operation for 35 years, this is one of the most successful, longest existing facilities for at-risk horses in the United States - over 400 (plus dozens of other animals) have come to the sanctuary to live out their lives in peace and freedom. She has written numerous feature articles for high-profile equestrian magazines and is also the author of three nonfiction books which chronicle the inspiring history of Proud Spirit. More recently, Melanie Sue veered into writing novels for young readers. LIBERTY BISCUIT and the stand-alone sequel LITTLE PEARL are set on a rural farm. There are peach biscuits, family secrets, a mystery, and a bedraggled little donkey who adds his own style of hi-jinks and shenanigans. And, of course, horses! LITTLE PEARL was recently selected as a finalist in the North Carolina Young People's Literature Award. Come see photographs from the sanctuary, hear about Melanie Sue's journey with horses and learn more about her writing life. Listed from Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's public calendar.
