Lise Hicks will be at Joyner-Green Valley Library to talk about her historical novel, The Fearing Time. New Mexico, 1864. After being starved out of her homeland, twelve-year-old Steady Wind is stolen by Mexican slavers on The Long Walk to Fort Sumner, and sold at auction. Though she and her four-year-old sister, Cactus Flower, are able to stay together through an act of grace, her troubles aren't over. She's given a new name. She's forced to convert to Catholicism. She must speak Spanish. And even as she schemes to find her parents and return to her traditional way of life, her sister begins to forget. As Steady Wind finds ways to adapt, the Civil War ends and the nation looks westward. When circumstances drastically change once again, she must choose what to cling to—and what to let go of. Lise Hicks has always been intrigued by the stories that don't make it into the history books. After she retired, she spent years researching the history of Native American enslavement—digging through archives, walking the land, sheepherding on the Navajo reservation, and learning to weave—in preparation for writing The Fearing Time . When she isn't traveling the world birdwatching, she splits her time between Tucson, Arizona, and Tacoma, Washington. Books will be available for purchase & signing. Space is limited. Entry tickets will be available at the Service Desk starting at 2pm on November 19. Doors open at 2:45pm. Listed from Pima County Public Library's public calendar. How did Minnesota become “the state that votes” – that is, the state that’s known for high-turnout, fraud-free elections? The answer lies in a story that centers on the leadership of Joan Anderson Growe, who served 24 years as Minnesota’s secretary of state. It’s told in the 2020 book, “ Turnout: Making Minnesota the State that Votes ,” which Growe wrote with Lori Sturdevant. A retired Star Tribune editorial writer and columnist, Sturdevant is the author, editor or ghostwriter of 15 books and a three-time winner of the Minnesota Book Award. She will discuss that book as well as her latest, “ Martin Sabo: The Making of the Modern Legislature .” Q&A to follow. Books will be available for signing and purchase.
