Join us for a community conversation with Dr. Thao Ha, author of Love Letters to the Dirty South . Love Letters to the Dirty South is a memoir about what it means to love, long for, and lose someone incarcerated. A testament to lifelong love, it is also an unflinching depiction of prison culture, a loving portrait of family life in the Vietnamese diaspora community, and a counternarrative to the typical immigrant’s story. Dr. Thao Ha will be in conversation with Eddy Zheng from New Breath Foundation to discuss the entanglement and impacts of the carceral system on the Vietnamese American refugees and their families. Following a brief talk about her journey, the floor will open for an interactive Q&A and refreshments. Copies of the book will be available for purchase by the Friends of the Tully Library and a portion of proceeds will go toward library programs. Free. No registration required. Running multimillion dollar scams with Saul, he has been Saul's fixer, but now he wants out of the hustle so that he can focus on his teenage daughter's burgeoning tennis career and finally be the dad he has always wanted to be. But when the Los Angeles Chargers' star running back vanishes one evening before a big game, Coltrane is drawn into an investigation of what happened by Saul and his protégé, the player's agent; the stakes escalate with a gut-punch when the trail leads into San Diego's underworld of drugs and prostitution and reveals clues to the disappearance of his daughter's best friend, whose loss has haunted him. Torn by the unreconcilable demands of the life he can't seem to quit and the fierce desire he has to protect his own, Coltrane brings himself and his loved ones to the brink of destruction in his quest to free himself once and for all of S Listed from Boston Public Library's public calendar. How did Minnesota become “the state that votes” – that is, the state that’s known for high-turnout, fraud-free elections? The answer lies in a story that centers on the leadership of Joan Anderson Growe, who served 24 years as Minnesota’s secretary of state. It’s told in the 2020 book, “ Turnout: Making Minnesota the State that Votes ,” which Growe wrote with Lori Sturdevant. A retired Star Tribune editorial writer and columnist, Sturdevant is the author, editor or ghostwriter of 15 books and a three-time winner of the Minnesota Book Award. She will discuss that book as well as her latest, “ Martin Sabo: The Making of the Modern Legislature .” Q&A to follow. Books will be available for signing and purchase.
