Join University of Michigan professor Karin A. Martin for a conversation about her new book Get Plum Island!: Place and Politics in Massachusetts’s Ten-Year Fight Over the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. The book tells the story of how the USFWS became interested in establishing a national wildlife refuge in Massachusetts, why Essex County became a premiere location, and how local communities and the state nearly succeeded in having the refuge abolished. Instead, after rounds of Congressional hearings and pocket veto by President Truman, a compromise was reached, reducing the refuge to about half its original size, and yet preserving the wonderful, vibrant refuge we know today. Karin A. Martin is the Mark A. Chesler Collegiate Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan. She grew up in Amesbury, MA, received a BA from Hampshire College, and a PhD in Sociology from the University of California at Berkeley. But when the Los Angeles Chargers' star running back vanishes one evening before a big game, Coltrane is drawn into an investigation of what happened by Saul and his protégé, the player's agent; the stakes escalate with a gut-punch when the trail leads into San Diego's underworld of drugs and prostitution and reveals clues to the disappearance of his daughter's best friend, whose loss has haunted him. Torn by the unreconcilable demands of the life he can't seem to quit and the fierce desire he has to protect his own, Coltrane brings himself and his loved ones to the brink of destruction in his quest to free himself once and for all of S Listed from Boston Public Library's public calendar. How did Minnesota become “the state that votes” – that is, the state that’s known for high-turnout, fraud-free elections? The answer lies in a story that centers on the leadership of Joan Anderson Growe, who served 24 years as Minnesota’s secretary of state. It’s told in the 2020 book, “ Turnout: Making Minnesota the State that Votes ,” which Growe wrote with Lori Sturdevant. A retired Star Tribune editorial writer and columnist, Sturdevant is the author, editor or ghostwriter of 15 books and a three-time winner of the Minnesota Book Award. She will discuss that book as well as her latest, “ Martin Sabo: The Making of the Modern Legislature .” Q&A to follow. Books will be available for signing and purchase.
