This program invites teens to explore Pulitzer Prize-winning poetry and music through a creative, hands-on art workshop led by artist and musician Antonia Lucas-Ruppert. Teen participants will reflect on powerful works of music utilizing a playlist curated by Ruppert. Using these works as inspiration, participants will create their own original music translating ideas, emotions, and their own stories while considering how Pulitzer Prize-winning artists connect to their own lives and experiences. Chicago-born Antonia Ruppert is an artist, singer-songwriter and educator who has been painting for over 30 years. Growing up in Chicago’s Austin community, she creates paintings that connect people and tell a story. The oldest of six siblings, with no funds to purchase art supplies, she recalls drawing on discarded paper inserts from her Mom’s stockings. These humble beginnings have been instrumental in inspiring hundreds of paintings and drawings, where hope, faith and community are central. Ruppert, an M.F.A. graduate of Clark University in Massachusetts, a graduate Loyola University Chicago — was a 2025 featured panelist for the Healing Arts conference at the UNGA, NYC, the 2023 honoree of the Peggy A. Montes Unsung Heroine Award for Cook County, IL, 2022 Artist in Residence for the Addison Public Library and the 2021 Invest South/West Artist in Residence for Chicago’s Austin community. Before becoming an oral historian himself, Mark Larson had the unique experience of being interviewed twice by Studs Terkel, once for Race (under the pseudonym Peter Soderstrom) and later for Hope Dies Last . Larson also sat with Terkel in the WFMT studio as Terkel conducted a live interview for his radio program. Drawing on these encounters, Larson recalls what it felt like to be Terkel's interviewee and what it was like to watch one of America's great listeners at work. He reflects on what Terkel taught him about asking questions and truly listening for what's underneath the answers, and how those experiences inspired his own work in oral history. He is currently completing Whole and True, based on 35 conversations with legendary Broadway composer John Kander ( Cabaret, Chicago ) and interviews with his collaborators, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alan Cumming, Colman Domingo, Bebe Neuwirth, Susan Stroman and David Hyde Pierce. Join Chicago Public Library and Pulitzer-winning journalists for a night of entertaining live storytelling celebrating the power of local news to create change. Some stories will be funny, others moving -- all will be compelling. Each journalist will share a true, personal story about the impact of their reporting on their communities and themselves. Storytellers include Chicago-based Pulitzer winners Yohance Lacour of The Invisible Institute , Laura Rodruigez Presa of the Chicago Tribune , Mary Schmich, formerly of the Chicago Tribune , Liz Sawyer of the Minnesota Star Tribune and two-time Pulitzer winner and Board member John Archibald of AL.com . Nicole Carroll, Pulitzer Board Chair and leader of local news nonprofit Newswell , will moderate the evening. This event is the launch celebration of The Pulitzer on the Road traveling exhibition, developed by the Pulitzer Prizes in partnership with the American Library Association. The Chicago Public Library is the first site of the Pulitzer on the Road traveling exhibition, which will visit 20 public libraries across the country over two years.
